At its sitting held on 28 March 2006, the Education Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia noted that statutory conditions had been met for the election of members of the National Higher Education Council.

At its sitting of 1 March the Committee had discussed lists of nominees proposed by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Serbian Conference of Universities, the Serbian Conference of College Headmasters, and the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

At that time the Committee noted that Dr Slobodan Dusanic, Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, had been nominated by both the Government and the Conference of Universities. The Committee had resolved to instruct both bodies to urgently amend their lists, by mutual agreement, and so resolve the nomination issue.

At today’s sitting the Committee noted that the Government had informed the National Assembly on 13 March 2006 that it would be nominating Dr Aleksandar Ivic, Professor at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the University of Belgrade, instead of Dr Dusanic, who remains candidate on behalf of the Serbian Conference of Universities.

The Committee also noted that the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina had, on 15 March 2006, informed the National Assembly that it was withdrawing its nomination of Dr Momcilo Grubac, and would instead nominate Dr Milan Matavulj, Professor at the University of Belgrade.

The list of nominees for membership on the National Higher Education Council, comprised of 16 names, was finalised at today’s sitting.

The chairperson of the Education Committee, Donka Banovic, was designated Rapporteur on behalf of the Committee for the upcoming National Assembly sitting.
