20th Sitting of the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee

On 3 February, the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee held a sitting outside of the National Assembly headquarters, at Krusevac City Assembly Hall.

The Committee discussed livestock breeding – production and foreign trade, current situation as regards food safety and analysed the agricultural food products import in the previous period.
The participants of the sitting were greeted by the Mayor of Krusevac Dragi Nestorovic who presented the basic data on export from Rasina District which, the Mayor of Krusevac said, reaches up to 30 million EUR, with the export of raspberries at the forefront, followed by blackberry, edible fruit seedlings and apples.
Nenad Budimovic of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce spoke about the state of livestock breeding in Serbia, protection of domestic agricultural production and drop in meat and dairy prices in the European Union. Budimovic presented the key data on the import of food products into Serbia, adding that the export potential is underutilised.
The Committee members drew attention to the dire situation as regards fatling prices asking that the adoption of protective non-tariff measures, due to jeopardized market prices, be proposed at a Government session. The Committee members appealed to the Committee to adopt more radical conclusions so as to protect agricultural production in Serbia. They also asked that a livestock breeding development programme be adopted for Sandzak.
The sitting was also attended by representatives of agricultural producers’ associations from the Rasina District, Kraljevo, Arilje, Kragujevac and Sabac, who spoke of the problems in agriculture, cattle stock and the work of the Veterinary Directorate.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Zoran Rajic spoke of the protection measures for agricultural producers and return of protective non-tariff measures.
Representative of the Veterinary Directorate Slobodan Sibalic informed the participants about the food safety control system on the market and collated food safety control plan documents. Although at the moment Serbia does not have all of these documents, all the relevant authorities in the food safety segment are doing their job in line with the law, said Sibalic.
Having discussed all the items on its agenda, the Committee passed a number of conclusions.
The sitting outside of the National Assembly headquarters was organised with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), via project Strengthening the Oversight Role and Transparency of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Marijan Risticevic.
