12th Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 9 October, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality discussed issues relating to the elections for national minority councils.

Ivan Bosnjak, State Secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, said that the Ministry had done its duty, in line with its authority, to ensure the unimpeded conduction of the pre-election process. Nina Fira, representative of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, presented the Ministry’s activities in the pre-election process. She highlighted the Ministry’s close cooperation with the Republic Electoral Commission and with the OSCE thanks to which the electoral material has for the first time been translated into all 11 official languages in Serbia.
Ivan Sebek, Deputy Chairperson of the Republic Electoral Commission, informed the Committee members of the activities the REC has performed since the elections were called. He said that the Republic Electoral Commission has, to date, proclaimed 49 electoral lists for 15 national minority councils, adding that the deadline for the submission of lists runs out tomorrow, 10 October 2014, at midnight. Veljko Odalovic, Deputy Secretary of the Republic Electoral Commission, said that the state’s position on the issue is evidenced by the fact that the Republic Electoral Commission as the supreme electoral body has been entrusted with the duty to conduct the direct elections for members of the national minority councils. Odalovic also stressed that the high standards applied to the parliamentary and presidential elections have been applied to the national minority council elections as well.
Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic appealed to the members of national minorities to get registered on the specials electoral rolls and vote on 26 October so that the direct elections for members of the national minority councils might be conducted successfully.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic.
