11th Sitting of the Foreign Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 13 December, the Foreign Affairs Committee reviewed the Bill on the Confirmation of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Mutual Abolition of Visas for Holders of Ordinary Passports.

The Agreement was signed by the foreign ministers of Serbia and China on 5 October 2016 to ensure the further development of relations and overall cooperation between the two countries, said the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Agreement means a continuation of the visa liberalisation with countries outside of the EU with whom Serbia has a special interest for cooperation. The Agreement is reciprocal and its realisation does not require RS budgetary funds. Tourism is expected to first feel the effects of the Agreement, followed by the opening of a direct line Belgrade-Beijing-Belgrade, improved investment cooperation, development of road and rail traffic, etc. The Agreement also has a security aspect as regards the stay of Chinese citizens in Serbia, which the Ministry of the Interior is to take care of, as it had previously consented.

Following a debate, mainly focused on the security impact and the fact that Serbia is the first in Europe to sign an agreement of this kind with China, the Committee members accepted the Bill on the Confirmation of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Mutual Abolition of Visas for Holders of Ordinary Passports by majority vote.

The Committee then proceeded to accept an initiative for a visit, adopted three reports on visits realised and note parliamentary and other realised contacts.

The Committee decided that Committee member Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic should represent it at the interparliamentary conference “Local and regional governments in the enlargement region and EU regional policy”, to be held on 30 and 31 January 2017, in the European Parliament, Brussels.

The sitting was attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Dragan Sormaz, Dusica Stojkovic, Djordje Vukadinovic, Marko Blagojevic, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Jovan Jovanovic, Jovan Palalic, Maja Macuzic, Zika Gojkovic, Nikola Savic and MA Aleksandra Jerkov.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic.
