Zarko Obradovic on Migrants before Council of Europe PA

Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, briefed the members of the PACE Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons Committee on the sudden increase in the numbers of migrants in Serbia and the problems the country has because of it.

“Serbia has accepted more than thirty thousand migrants since the beginning of the year and provided them with food, clothes and essential medical assistance in the shelters. Migrants arrive into Serbia from EU countries, from Bulgaria and Greece, via Macedonia. In the last few days several thousand refugees have tried to illegally enter Hungary, but were prevented. Serbia cannot address the problem alone while the neighbouring Hungary announces it will build a wall along the border to prevent the migrants from entering.”

Prof. Dr Obradovic said that Serbia cannot handle the rising the numbers of migrants and asked the Council of Europe and the European Union to help Serbia, a country that shares European values and wants to participate in the solution of this common problem. He also announced the Serbian Government’s initiative to organize a regional conference on the matter.

Rapporteur Tineke Strik of the Netherlands commended the initiative and said that she would include the information shared here in the report of the Council of Europe PA Committee.
