Universal Children’s Day

On Universal Children’s Day, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Maja Gojkovic said that the Serbian Assembly is committed to creating the legal prerequisites necessary to promote children’s rights by applying European standards and implementing the obligations the country had assumed by ratifying the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Though Serbia has achieved a marked progress in the improvement of children’s rights and created the legislative framework for the protection of children, facts still warn us of vulnerable categories whose position needs to be improved. The vulnerable categories, such as street children, children without parental care, children with developmental problems, require special attention in order to overcome their problems. The data on children who had suffered some form of physical or psychological abuse is also cause for concern and calls for the further development of the child protection system.

The National Assembly and the Committee on the Rights of the Child will continue to work toward creating equal opportunities for all children and building a society where their rights will be fully protected.
