Third Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

The topic of the sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child held on 15 November 2024 was the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - a comprehensive law on children's rights.

The Chairperson of the Committee for the Rights of the Child and Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabic said that in 1999, Serbia was among the first in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which represents the most important international document on the human rights of children.

"The Republic of Serbia has also ratified two optional protocols to the Convention, i.e. the Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography and the Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflicts, and in accordance with the obligations assumed by the ratification of the Convention, Serbia, as a contracting state, submits to the Committee on the Rights of the Child periodic reports every five years," Brnabic said.

She reminded the Committee members that at the previous sitting, the issue of adopting an umbrella law on the rights of the child was raised and that she pointed out the importance of comparative legal analysis, in order to gain insight into the practice of other countries. That request, in the meantime, was sent to the Ministry of Family Welfare and Demography and the obtained analysis was submitted to all members of the Committee, said Speaker Brnabic.

In the continuation, the members of the Committee were informed about project “Parliamentoring”.

The Committee members also raised the issues of daycare centres for children with behavioural problems, the number of pedagogists and psychologists per school and finding solutions to speed up the deployment of needed school staff, as well as the exploitation of child beggars.

The Committee Chairperson stressed that the abovementioned topics will be discussed at the next sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic, and attended by the following Subcommittee members and deputy members: Snezana Paunovic, Elvira Kovacs, Edin Djerlek, Dr Jovan Janjic, Haji Milorad Stosic, Natasa Ivanovic, Vesna Nedovic, Doc.Dr.Sci.med Marija Zdravkovic, Prim.Dr Nada Macura, Tatjana Petrovic Stojkovic, Anita Nesic, Jelena Pavlovic, Ilo Mihajlovski, Dr Emese Uri, Zagorka Aleksic, Branimir Jovanovic, Milija Miletic, Slavica Radovanovic, Marina Mijatovic, Dr Zoran Lutovac, Dr Dragana Rakic, Dr Milica Marusic Jablanovic, Sladjana Miletic and Dr Tijana Peric Diligenski.
