Talks with German Bundestag Speaker

Chairperson of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Nataša Micic held talks today at the Assembly with the Speaker of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany Wolfgang Thierse, who is on a visit to our country.

Expressing her thanks for the support and assistance Germany has provided so far, the National Assembly's Chairperson acquainted the high-ranking guest with the efforts and activities our country and the National Assembly have so far made in paving the way for integration into the European community of nations. These include a wide-ranging task of codification, as well as changes rounded off with legislation. Speaking about establishing cooperation on a new basis, Nataša Micic stressed that our priority was association with European integrations. An essential prerequisite for this is the support and assistance of European countries, among them Germany as well, which has in the previous period been our country's most important strategic partner. The Chairperson specially stressed our country's interests in the field of economic relations, relations with our citizens living abroad, cultural and educational cooperation, as well as support for our country's joining the Council of Europe and Partnership for Peace, and concluding the Treaty on Stabilisation and Association.

The German Bundestag's Speaker Wolfgang Thierse stressed that his country had with great interest and sympathy been following the economic and social development of Yugoslavia since the commencement of the democratic changes, and had been providing support for the ongoing democratic changes. He noted that great importance was being attached to regional stability, of which our country is an important factor. Also significant are economic growth and the redefinition of relations within our country, which will be given further support by Germany, as well as by other countries of the European Union.
