A delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, composed of Ivan Andric, Chairman of the Committee on Culture and Information, Nada Kolundžija, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Srdan Sikimic, member of the Legislative Committee, held talks today at the Assembly with Council of Europe representatives Mario Oetheimer, Basil Ader and Johannes Weberling, media and human rights experts. The talks centred on draft legislation on broadcasting and public information.
It was pointed out in the talks that, according to European standards, media laws express the principles of free flow of information and human rights protection, and are therefore important as a criterion of our country's democratisation. The laws currently being prepared will, it was said, transform the media system, and implement these principles in the field of information. Adopting these solutions will make us part of the community of democratic societies, and remove the anomalies experienced so far in the areas of broadcasting and public information.
The National Assembly delegation thanked the Council of Europe's representatives for their commitment so far, and expressed its readiness to speed up, as much as possible, the adoption of these laws; that is, that they should be adopted under urgent procedure.
