Seventh Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 14 May 2021, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality considered in principle the Bill amending and modifying the Anti-Discrimination Law and the Bill on Gender Equality.

The bills were presented by Gordana Comic, Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue.

The amendments to the Anti-Discrimination Law concern breaking down prejudices based on gender, religious and racial orientation. Gordana Comic said that the fight against discrimination began with the prevention of discrimination against people with disabilities. The goal is to work together and pinpoint the mistakes, to reduce the social behavior based on prejudice, reduce the unequal treatment in the labor sector, public life, media, culture, health, opined Comic.

The Bill on Gender Equality is just as important for women as for men, the Minister said. "Gender is a biological category, but everything else is determined by society which construct a role for both women and men, and it is these roles that make people unhappy," Comic stressed. She added that the National Assembly’s job is to explain why changes in the roles of women and men are needed, and it is up to the executive authorities to prepare draft laws which will concern the equal participation in decision-making by both women and men in the present as well as in the future.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dr Muamer Bacevac, and was attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Vesna Stjepanovic, Andrijana Avramov, Zoltan Pek, Jelena Mihailovic, Dr Nina Pavicevic, Nebojsa Bakarec, Viktor Jevtovic and Dejan Stosic.
