Serbian Community in Romania Among Best Organised Communities in Diaspora
At the invitation of the Union of Serbs in Romania, the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region MA Ivan Kostic and Committee member Aleksandar Cotric visited the Serbian community in Timisoara, 17-19 August 2016.
The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region MA Ivan Kostic and Committee member Aleksandar Cotric visited Timisoara,17-19 August 2016, and spoke to representatives of Serbs in Romania. On coming to Timisoara, the Committee delegation first met with Lazar Manojlovic, Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Timisoara, and were briefed on the activities of the Serb community in Romania. At a subsequent press conference, Committee Chairman MA Ivan Kostic and Consul General Lazar Manojlovic stated that the Republic of Romania fulfils its duties to the Serbian community living in Romania in accordance with the Constitution and Law, especially in the spheres of culture, education, the media and political life. They also concluded that the Serbian community in Romania is one of the best organised communities in the diaspora.
The Committee delegation also met with Slavomir Gvozdenovic, Serbian member of the Romanian Parliament, who stressed that the Serbian community has been tirelessly working on preserving its national identity for 25 year now. Gvozdenovic said that he expected the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region and the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region to help improve and promote of the position of the Serbian people in Romania.
On Transfiguration, 19 August, Committee Chairman Ivan Kostic and Committee member Aleksandar Cotric also attended the feast at the Monastery of Bazjas in the village of the same name on the banks of the Danube, founded by St. Sava in 1225. The Committee delegation spoke with the Bishop of Timisoara Lukian about the status of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Romania.
As part of the 23rd cultural event organized by the Union of Serbs in Romania, Serbian poet Adam Pusojlic was awarded by the Great Bazjas Charter at the Monastery.
