Second Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 16 November, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality were presented the planned activities of the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue by the Minister, Gordana Comic.

Comic said that the Ministry’s chief objective is to address the bad marks from the Report of the European Commission by working on the rule of law and to raise the 2.2 mark by 20% through demonstrable change so that in a year the state of human and minority rights and the rule of law Serbia gets at least 2.64 mark. The Minister said that Serbia can show that it has changed and create a just society, improve the state of minority rights and liberties, women’s rights, provide and efficient prevention of discrimination and create space for social dialogue. She added that the Ministry would monitor human rights in terms of political criteria and the rule of law, sustainable development and political culture, culture of dialogue and culture of compromise.

Committee Chairman Dr Muamer Bacevac said that he would endorse the Ministry’s working goals and work on their being endorsed at the executive level. Bacevac said that the establishment of the Ministry was very important since it did not exist back when the Committee was set up 2012, but that did not mean that there had been no cooperation with the executive on these matters. The cooperation existed with the ministries which had the fight for human and minority rights and gender equality within their purview and the Office for Human and Minority Rights. He also said he was certain the Ministry would be the keystone of social dialogue.

The presentation was followed by a discussion after which the Committee members endorsed the planned activities of the Ministry.
