On 22 January 2014, the National Assembly hosted a roundtable on the Relationship between the Parliament and Independent State Bodies, as part of component 4 of the Twinning project dealing with improving the National Assembly’s control function and cooperation with the Serbian Government and independent state bodies.

The participants of the roundtable spoke of the mechanisms for the improvement of the cooperation between the National Assembly and the independent state bodies by analysing European best practice examples.

The roundtable, opened by Deputy Secretary General and Project Deputy Team Leader Mladen Mladenovic, was attended by MPs, members of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Culture and Information Committee, representatives of independent state bodies, Ombudsman, Anti-Corruption Agency, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, Commissioner for Protection of Equality and National Assembly Support Service staff.

The Greek experts lectured on relevant parliamentary procedures and best European practice relating to cooperation between the parliament and independent state bodies, followed by a discussion on the conclusions and draft recommendations about how to improve the course of communication, report reviews and monitor the implementation of the independent state bodies’ recommendations.

The realisation of Twinning project “Strengthening the capacities of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in the European integration process” at the National Assembly, in cooperation with the Hellenic Parliament, started on 1 January 2013 and will continue for 18 months.
