Ragus Receives Prime Minister of Tuvalu

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus met today with the Prime Minister of Tuvalu Feleti Penitala Teo currently in official visit to Serbia.


The National Assembly Deputy Speaker started by saying how pleased she was with the meeting, stressing that the arrival of the Prime Minister of Tuvalu is just the beginning of a dynamic cooperation that will fortify the ties between the two states and their peoples. She informed that Prime Minister that the National Assembly has a Parliamentary Friendship Group with Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Island States, which can serve as yet another type of parliamentary cooperation. “Today, we open a completely new dimension of cooperation and I am looking forward to future exchanges of visits at all levels and I am sure we will have the opportunity to get to know one another better”, stressed Ragus, adding that at the next plenary session the National Assembly will adopt the Bill on the Confirmation of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Tuvalu on Mutual Visa Abolition for Holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports which will contribute to the frequency of these visits.

Feleti Penitala Teo said he was honoured to be the first official of his country to visit Serbia and stressed the importance of this visit, which opens doors to various forms of cooperation. He stated that at yesterday's meetings with the officials of our country, he discussed cooperation in the field of high technologies, cyber security, data storage in digital form and satellite communication. He also said that another form of cooperation that could connect the two countries is providing scholarships for young people in areas of interest. The Prime Minister said that he would revise Tuvalu’s decision to recognise the so-called State of Kosovo, with Ragus pointing out that this would be of great importance for our country, considering that this province is the cradle of our nation.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker introduced the Prime Minister to various projects and programmes, singling the "World in Serbia" among them, which awards scholarships for free education, through the digitalisation project that will connect the most remote villages and towns in the country through a stable Internet network. Ragus also mentioned the project through which the state is trying to transfer the entire economy to cyberspace, that Serbia has several data centres that store state institutions data and that more than 50% of the activities of the Government of the Republic of Serbia can already be found in digital format, thanks to the Government Office for electronic administration. The officials also discussed artificial intelligence, with Ragus saying that Serbia has an Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Novi Sad and a strategy for the use of artificial intelligence.

The officials also spoke about participation in international forums, biotechnologies and environmental protection, concluding that there is a wide range of areas in which the two countries can cooperate and agreeing that this is the beginning of fruitful cooperation.
