Public Hearing on Role and Importance of HPV Immunisation

With the support of UNDP, the Health and Family Committee organised a public hearing on “Role and importance of HPV immunisation”.

Health and Family Committee Chairman Doc. Dr Darko Laketic said that the public hearing was organised to raise public health awareness on the importance of HPV vaccination in the Republic of Serbia, which would reduce the number of women afflicted and with it the mortality rate. He commended the Health Ministry’s programme “Improving the prevention of HPV-associated disease” conducted in 2016 as voluntary anti-HPV vaccination in four countries in the Republic of Serbia (Sumadija, Branicevo, North Banat and the city of Belgrade), accompanied by expert methodological instructions and a supply of vaccines.

Prof. Dr Berislav Vekic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Health, said that, since the cause of HPV-associated cancers is well-known, prevention is possible, which is the Ministry’s priority. Prevention is two-pronged: immunization in adolescence and screening, said the Vekic emphasising the importance of the Healthcare Law currently being prepared which makes screening obligatory. Vekic said that continued medical training, accredited by the Serbian Health Council, has been conducted through 4 seminars and a sizable number of medical workers have been trained. 20 training workshops on efficient communication of healthcare workers and parents were also held and an expert methodological instruction for the application of the HPV vaccine was drafted.

Zsofia Pusztai, Head of the World Health Organisation Serbia Office, commended Serbia’s work on promoting prevention of HPV and raising awareness on the importance of HPV immunisation. The attending were also addressed by Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, minister without portfolio in charge of population policy, who spoke of the importance of cooperation between healthcare institutions and local self-government units about raising awareness on prevention among women.

The public hearing was attended by Committee members, Dr Verica Jovanovic, Director of “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut” Public Health Institute, Prof. Dr Aleksandar Stefanovic, Director of the KCS Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics and President of the Republic Expert Commission for Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dr Katarina Sedlecki of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology of the “Dr Vukan Cupic” Institute for Health Protection of Mother and Child of Serbia, Dr Srdja Jankovic, immunologist at the Tirsova University Children’s Hospital, as well as representatives of relevant institutions and civic associations.
