Presentation of LGBT-Related Public Policy at National Assembly

The National Assembly hosted a roundtable presentation of a public policy proposal concerning the protection of the rights and improvement of the quality of life of LGBT people. The roundtable was co-organised by the Culture and Information Committee, Labris and the Forum for Ethnic Relations.


Opening the roundtable, the Chairperson of the Culture and Information Committee Vesna Marjanovic reminded everybody of the constitutional rights of minority communities and asked the MPs to contribute to the exercise of the rights and better quality of life of LGBT people by regulating the implementation of the law.

Slobodan Boban Stojanovic. Executive Director at Queeria centre for the promotion of non-violence and equality, the author and presenter of the public policy proposal informed the participants of the roundtable about the idea to raise awareness on LGBT issues and fight homophobia by promoting cultural contents. He spoke about increasing the visibility of the works of LGBT authors and artists and working toward a better understanding of the history and goals of the LGBT movement.

Presenting the work of Labris, Dragana Todorovic, representative of the organisation which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, said that as much as 20% of young people approve of discrimination against the LGBT community, while about 40% of Serbian citizens believe homosexuality to be a social threat.

The participants of the roundtable discussed a systemic solution to the problems of the LGBT community, while Committee Chairperson Vesna Marjanovic suggested that the Public Service Programme Board should increase its involvement in the matter by regularly addressing minority group issues.

Vesna Marjanovic announced that the Committee would suggest further steps of cooperation with the Government and the Ministry of Culture and Media in order to come to a consensus on the chief problems of the LGBT community.

The roundtable was also attended by the Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Marija Obradovic who endorsed the activities of the LGBT community, expressing readiness to help address the problems troubling the LGBT community, which fall within the scope of the Committee she chairs.
