Parliamentary Seminar Held on Human Rights Protection and the State of Women’s and Children’s Rights

The European Parliament’s Directorate General for Relations with National Parliaments and Directorate General for External Policies organised a parliamentary seminar on “Human rights protection and the state of women’s and children’s rights”, on 14 and 15 November 2012, in Brussels.

The participants of the seminar, MPs and officials of the parliaments of Western Balkan countries were addressed by Eduard Kukan, Head of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Human Rights Subcommittee, and Jelko Kacin, Delegation Deputy Head and European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia.
The members of the national parliaments of Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, representatives of UNMIK/Kosovo, members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission agreed, in the debate, that an exchange of experiences and opinions on the state of human rights and the rights of women and children is very important not only for the Western Balkan countries, but for the European Parliament and European Commission as well. The legislative framework is sound in all the Western Balkan countries, and what is needed is to ensure its efficient implementation and control, which necessitates strengthening the role of national parliaments.
The National Assembly’s delegation at the seminar comprised National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee member Gordana Comic, the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Meho Omerovic, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Tamara Tripic and member of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Jelena Budimirovic.
