Parliament Speakers Discuss Serbia-Hungary Relations

In the course of her one-day visit to Hungary, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Maja Gojkovic met with Hungarian Parliament Speaker László Kövér.

Gojkovic and Kövér agreed that the relations between Serbia and Hungary are at a high level, which was to a great degree aided by the frequent meetings between their respective dignitaries and dynamic exchanges between their parliaments.

Speaking about furthering parliamentary cooperation Gojkovic mentioned that the two parliaments had signed a cooperation agreement eight years ago opening plenty of opportunities to solidify said agreement by concretising the cooperation between the working bodies in charge of agriculture, economy, security, tourism, culture and especially Euro-integration in view of Serbia’s expectations as regards the opening of the first negotiation chapters where Hungary’s experience and support would be invaluable.

The National Assembly Speaker said that Hungary’s support for the opening of chapters 35 and 32, as well as 23 and 24, is very important to Serbia.

Kövér said that the two countries’ relations have greatly improved and have a strategic importance, adding that the two countries’ presidents and prime ministers played a key role in these developments, as did the parliamentarians.

Kövér stressed that Serbia and Hungary have every right to be proud of their relations which can be an excellent example for the region, adding that they should, nevertheless, be developed further.

Speaking about Euro-integration Kövér said that after the integration process is completed Serbia would remain a strategic partner to Hungary, because the accession should be followed by efforts toward the further development of the EU.

Gojkovic and Kövér also discussed economic cooperation and supported the two governments’ Belgrade-Budapest railway revitalisation project which is in the interest of both countries.

They spoke about strengthening cultural cooperation, fostering ties between the two nations and improving the status of the national minorities, and Gojkovic stressed that the minorities are in fact a bridge connecting the two states. They also discussed the current challenges faced by Europe – migration and terrorism.

Gojkovic also met with the Head of the Hungary-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group Károly Pánczél.
The delegation also comprised the Head of the National Assembly’s Parliamentary Friendship Group with Hungary Zarko Micin.
