PFG with Mexico Meets with Mexican Ambassador to Serbia

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Mexico met today, at the National Assembly House with the Ambassador of Mexico to the Republic of Serbia, Carlos Felix, to discuss the deepening of overall cooperation between the two countries.

The Head of the Friendship Group, Olja Petrovic, recalled that official diplomatic relations were established during the Cold War in 1946 and strengthened during the Non-Aligned Movement, although according to the documents the diplomatic relations began decades earlier. She said that the National Assembly’s Friendship Group with Mexico has 46 members and added that the MPs are open to deepening cooperation with Mexico. She took the opportunity to thank the Ambassador for the vote against the membership of Kosovo-Metohija in the international organisations of Interpol, the UN and UNESCO and for the implementation of Resolution 1244, which advocates for peace and dialogue. Petrovic added that Serbia is preparing for the EXPO 2027 exhibition and expressed her satisfaction that Mexico has shown confidence in Serbia as the host, for this type of connecting countries at the level of business and innovation. She underlined that Serbia and Mexico share common positions on many issues and that, in addition to strong cultural ties, they want to deepen relations and strengthen bilateral ties through education, economy and technology.

Ambassador Carlos Felix thanked PFG for the warm reception and expressed his satisfaction that it is headed by a woman, stressing that, for the first time, Mexico elected a woman as the president of the country. He added that Mexico advocates for greater representation of women in politics and noted that Serbia is very successful in this area. The Ambassador emphasised that, in the current very challenging geopolitical turmoil, it is of great importance that friendly countries support each other and find new forms of cooperation and connectivity. "We must continue to support dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law, because these are the key elements for navigating towards more stable times," the Ambassador said. He underlined the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and meetings between parliamentarians of the two countries. He also spoke about the twinning Mexican and Serbian cities, stating that these practices already exist with the cities of Novi Sad and Leskovac, and that citizens represent another unbreakable bond between the two countries. He stressed that Mexico will not stop supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia or the implementation of international law. In the course of the conversation, the Ambassador also stated that cultural exchange is at a high level and that over 40 novels by Mexican writers have been translated into Serbian.

The officials also discussed the celebration of 80 years of diplomatic relations, which will be next year, as well as mutual visits between parliamentarians, once a friendship group is formed in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies.

The meeting also touched on the initiative that the Ambassador will send to the Parliamentary Friendship Group, to name a street in Belgrade Mexico, which the PFG will forward to the relevant institutions.

The meeting was also attended by PFG member Aleksandar Markovic who also discussed the position of minorities in the two countries with the Ambassador, as well as MPs Milica Nikolic and Vesna Nedovic.
