PFG with Italy Meets with Italian Minister for Parliamentary Relations Luca Ciriani
The Head of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Italy, the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta, Jovan Palalic, and PFG members Danijela Nikolic, Ana Miljanic and Olivera Denic, met with the Italian Minister for Parliamentary Relations Luca Ciriani.
Palalic highlighted the exceptional economic relations between Serbia and Italy, stressing that Italy is Serbia's second largest trading partner in Europe and third globally. He assessed that the political relations between the two countries have reached the highest level in the last hundred years, especially since the emergence of Giorgia Meloni as Prime Minister of Italy, who has devoted significant attention to the Western Balkans, and especially Serbia. As he emphasised, the exceptional cooperation is also evidenced by a series of visits at the highest state level.
Palalic thanked Italy for its unconditional support of Serbia in the European integration process, stressing that it is difficult to imagine any enlargement of the European Union without Serbia's membership in it. In this context, he emphasised that Serbia needs clarification of the conditions for opening Cluster 3, given that all necessary reforms have already been implemented.
Speaking about Kosovo-Metohija, Palalic stressed that it is an inseparable part of Serbia, however the Serbian people there face serious repression by the government of Albin Kurti, which makes the living conditions there unbearable.
"We must keep our citizens safe in their homes, because it is vital, both from the standpoint of international law and from a humanitarian perspective. Therefore, we ask Italy to support our country in places where its voice is heard," said Palalic.
Danijela Nikolic, member of the PFG with Italy and of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija, spoke about the difficult situation of the Serbian and non-Albanian population in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as the brutal violations of human and humanitarian rights. She pointed out that, since Albin Kurti came to power, more than 700 ethnically motivated attacks on Serbs have been recorded and thousands of cultural and religious sites have been devastated. She also recalled that the Community of Serb Municipalities has not been formed for 13 years, although this is guaranteed by the Brussels Agreement. Nikolic especially thanked the Italian members of KFOR who guard the monastery Visoki Decani, emphasising that it owes its protection to them.
Minister Ciriani agreed that the European Union cannot be complete without Serbia, as one of the most important factors in the region.
"We are here to support Serbia on its path towards the EU. The Italian Government is close to the Serbian one in good times and in bad, and Serbia can always count on our support," said Ciriani.
Speaking about economic cooperation, he also mentioned the EXPO 2027 exhibition, which, as he emphasised, is an event of exceptional importance.
At the end of the meeting, MPs Ana Miljanic and Olivera Denic took the opportunity to underline the importance of the support that Italy provides to Serbia on its European path.
