PFG with France Meets with French Ambassador to Serbia

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with France headed by MA Jadranka Jovanovic, met today at the National Assembly House with French Ambassador Jean-Louis Falconi.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group MA Jadranka Jovanovic greeted the French Ambassador on behalf of the PFG members and on her own behalf.

She also said that she was re-elected to the position of the head of the National Assembly delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie.

The Head of the PFG with France said that Serbia is the key factor of stability in the region and it clearly shows its pro-European orientation. She thanked France for its unequivocal support of Serbia’s European integration process adding that the country’s strategic priority is EU accession.

In the course of the meeting, Jovanovic also spoke of several parliamentary visits, namely the visits of the delegations of the National Assembly and Senate of the Republic of France to Serbia, which clearly speaks of the excellent overall relations between the two countries.

According to her, in addition to traditionally good political relations, the two countries have developed cooperation in the field of economy, culture and defence. She pointed out that speaking of economic cooperation there is room for its further improvement, and added that France, with its 1.24 billion EUR of investments in Serbia, is the seventh biggest investor in the country.

Jovanovic also expressed satisfaction that at the plenary session in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in July 2019, the Serbian National Assembly became an associate member of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, which is an important international organization whose members cooperate in the field of culture, science, economy, justice and peace.

Ambassador Jean-Louis Falconi expressed satisfaction at the fact that 83 MPs make up the PFG with France and agreed with Jovanovic that relations between the two countries are traditionally good.

He underlined that France will continue to support Serbia's European path and added that as one of the founding countries of this community, France attaches great importance to European integration.

He spoke about the excellent cooperation in the field of defence and culture and pointed out that economic cooperation though present is, in relation to the level of traditional friendship, still insufficient.

He also expressed hope that the visit of the President of the French Senate planned for this year, as well as other planned visits, would be realized next year, after the stabilization of health conditions.

The officials also discussed the possibilities for improving parliamentary cooperation, as well as cooperation within La Francophonie. They agreed that an exchange of visits of parliamentarians would contribute to the improvement of overall parliamentary and bilateral relations.

The meeting was also attended by PFG members: Dragomir Karic, Dr. Sci.med Darko Laketic and Daniel Gyivanovity.

Dragomir Karic spoke about the possibilities for developing economic and trade cooperation, while Dr Sci.med Laketic spoke of the two nations’ shared history and, among other things, mentioned that the French town of Epone and Prokuplje were officially twinned by a decision of the Prokuplje Assembly with the goal of developing cooperation and improving ties with the many Serbs living in the French town.
