Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic submitted the 2010 Annual Report to the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. This is the fourth report since the election of the Ombudsman and the establishment of said authority in the Republic of Serbia.

Jankovic informed the NARS Speaker that approximately 8500 citizens approached the Ombudsman in 2010, that over 2600 formal complaints were filed, 925 new proceedings to investigate the legitimacy and regularity of the work of public administration authorities were launched, proceedings were completed in over 1900 cases and 90 recommendations were implemented to remedy flaws and improve work. Jankovic said that in 300 cases immediately after receiving information from the Ombudsman that he is to launch an audit, the public administration bodies remedied the irregularities themselves.

The NARS Speaker was pleased by these facts as they justify the Ombudsman’s position and stressed that the citizens become more aware of their rights every day and recognize the Ombudsman as an authority they can approach to remedy certain irregularities impinging on their guaranteed civic rights. Djukic-Dejanovic wished the Ombudsman and his associated further success.

The document has multiple goals:

- to inform the National Assembly and other authorities, institutions and bodies, as well as the public, on the state of human and minority rights in the Republic of Serbia and how successfully civil rights are exercised before the authorities and organisations in charge of implementing the regulations of the Republic of Serbia;

- to point out the necessary changes in the work of the public sector that would improve the exercise of human and minority rights and liberties and improve the relationship between the citizens and authorities;

- to present the most important aspects of the Ombudsman’s work to the National Assembly and the public in line with the general tenets of responsibility for public affairs.
