National Assembly’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Chairperson Meets with Macedonian Defence Minister

The Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Marija Obradovic met today, at the National Assembly House with Macedonian Minister of Defence Zoran Jolevski.


The Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee said she was very pleased at the Macedonian Defence Minister’s visit as it gives them the opportunity to exchange views and discuss how to improve cooperation. Obradovic informed the Macedonian Defence Minister about the very close cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the National Assembly’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee. Obradovic, as the first woman to head the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee, stressed that in the current legislation a great many women have been included in the Committee’s work, underlining the importance of women in the security sector, which is the recommendation of SC Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security. Speaking of regional cooperation, Obradovic stressed how important it would be for the countries of the region to present a unified front in response to the challenges of local population protection.

The Macedonian Minister of Defence highlighted the importance of improving cooperation between the two countries’ respective defence ministries for furthering bilateral relations. He opined that cooperation should be expanded in several areas – military medicine, education of future officers and common protection again natural disasters. The Macedonian Minister of Defence agreed with the Committee Chairperson about the significance of the participation of women in the security sector. Jolevski said that the Republic of Macedonia finds the exchange of experiences between the two countries very important, especially since Serbia has considerable peace mission experience. He also said that Serbia’s progress in the EU talks has a positive impact on the countries in the region.
