National Assembly Standing Delegation to PACE at January Session in Strasbourg

The National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will be participating in the first part of the PACE plenary session in Strasbourg, from 26 to 31 January 2015.


The parliamentary delegation will be headed by Aleksandra Djurovic, Head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to PACE, and comprise Marija Obradovic, Aleksandar Jovicic, Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic, Elvira Kovacs, Natasa Vuckovic and Aleksandar Senic
 
The Assembly will be discussing the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, media freedom, intolerance and discrimination in Europe in times of crisis, rights of the disabled and the relations between the Council of Europe and the European Union. The session will also include an urgent debate following the Paris terrorist attacks.

The Committee on Political Affairs will have an important debate on the situation in Kosovo as part of its preparation of the PACE report on the topic, with Augustin Conde (Spain) as the rapporteur.

The parliamentarians will also be electing a Serbian judge to the European Court of Human Rights.

The PACE is also expected to discuss the status of the Russian delegation to the Council of Europe PA, and have a roundtable with the topic “Renewing trust in Europe: the role of parliamentary institutions” headed by Russian State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin.

The Assembly will be addressed by Irish President Michael Higgins and, traditionally, by the current chair of the Committee of Ministers Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, who will be presenting the activity plan and answer the parliamentarians’ questions. Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland will also deliver an address, as will Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Nils Muiznieks who will speak about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

On the first day of the session, the Assembly will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, at which Auschwitz survivors are due to speak.
