National Assembly Standing Delegation at PACE Session in Strasbourg
Today, in Strasbourg, the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe discussed the preliminary report on “Cultural heritage in crisis and post-crisis situations”, within the Fourth part of the plenary session.
“We insisted on having the facts about the destruction of Serbian heritage, especially the buildings destroyed or damaged during the March 2004 pogrom in Kosovo-Metohija, be included into the draft report. That is why I informed the Committee members that in these events alone 34 Christian Orthodox churches and other cultural and religious buildings had been damaged. We cannot allow the adoption of a CE resolution without the data on the decade-long destruction of more than 150 Orthodox churches and other religious buildings in Kosovo-Metohija”, pointed out Marija Obradovic, member of the Serbian parliamentary delegation and of the PACE Committee onCulture, Science, Education and Media.
“Our position was met with approval by the other Committee members and the rapporteur, especially in view of the fact that many of said objects are under UNESCO protection and many date from the middle-ages. The adoption of a resolution on the topic is expected in mid-2015 and we will be closely following its drafting until then”, concluded Obradovic.
