National Assembly Standing Delegation at CSTO PA Session

The National Assembly’s standing delegation to CSTO PA took part in the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO PA), on 26-28 November 2014, in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation.

The delegation comprised Milovan Drecun, Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to CSTO PA, Jasmina Obradovic, member of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to CSTO PA, and Momir Stojanovic, member of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to CSTO PA.

Milovan Drecun, Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and member of the Standing Commission for Political Issues and International Cooperation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, took part in the meeting of the CSTO PA Standing Commission for Political Issues and International Cooperation at the Parliamentary Centre in St. Petersburg. In his address, he stressed that the political situation in the Republic of Serbia is stable, that the country is in the midst of difficult structural reform aimed at creating conditions conducive to economic prosperity, that it is trying not to be dragged into the current geopolitical clash between the big powers and wants to cooperate with everybody and be a friend, to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity just as it asks that the territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia be respected, especially in Kosovo-Metohija and pointed out that the Government of the Republic of Serbia would not be instituting sanctions against the Russian Federation.

The meeting of the CSTO PA Standing Commission on Social, Economic and Legal Issues was attended by Jasmina Obradovic, member of the Standing Commission on Social, Economic and Legal Issues. She said that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia is working on the harmonisation, amendment and adoption of reform laws, adding that merely passing legislation is not enough – its implementation needs to be controlled. “It is our goal, as well as our duty, to create an attractive and stable economic environment for investment”, said Jasmina Obradovic thanking the Russian Federation for its help in the recovery of the damages caused by the floods Serbia suffered recently.

The seventh plenary session on the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly took place at the Tauride (Tavrichesky) Palace. Opening the session, CSTO PA Chairman and Speaker of the Russian Federation State Duma Sergei Naryshkin drew attention to the current “period of deep transformation of the global architecture”. He believes that the CSTO greatly contributes to the maintenance of security both at the regional and global level. Collective security rests on Euro-Asian integration. He described the current situation in Ukraine as extremely worrying. “People still perish there. Almost every day the Ukrainian military’s artillery, mine launchers and rockets claim civilian lives in Donbas” said Naryshkin, also informing about the possible expansion of the circle of CSTO PA observer countries.
