National Assembly Standing Delegation Takes Part in 15th PAM Plenary

The standing delegation of the National Asse3mbly of the Republic of Serbia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), took part in the 15th plenary session of the organisation that brings together the Mediterranean countries of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The main topics discussed were: fighting violence against women in the Mediterranean, artificial intelligence and protection of human rights in the digital world, economic impact of COVID-19 in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions and the political response for effective recovery. In addition to reviewing the relevant report, the PAM Standing Committee on Economic, Social and Environmental Cooperation issued an urgent appeal for cooperation in the field of climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean region.

At the plenary session, the PAM decided to set up a Women's Parliamentary Group of its own, a decision welcomed by MP Natasa Mihailovic-Vacic, member of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, who said that Serbia, that is its delegation to PAM can make a huge contribution to the work of the Women's Parliamentary Network of the Mediterranean, as the Serbian Parliament’s Women’s Network is an example of good practice, experience and concrete results in the process of promoting gender equality, through the improvement of existing laws and the legal framework and the adoption of new regulations relating to the advancement of the position of women.

According to the assessments of relevant international organisations, Serbia ranks fifth in Europe and among the top 20 countries in the world in terms of the representation of women in politics. The Parliament and the Government are focused on the constant improvement of gender equality, which is a precondition for the development of every society in the promotion of democracy, and in that sense the Serbian delegation’s support and contribution to the Mediterranean WPN can be of great importance.

"If we view gender equality and prevention of violence against women through prism of the UN sustainable development goals and the 2030 Agenda, it is clear that the three main pillars of sustainable development are peace, equality and consensus on the priorities of sustainable development of a society and state. As the biggest losers of development without peace, equality and consensus, women are the biggest promoters of these three pillars of development. There can be no sustainable development without peace or peace without sustainable development. This is also clear from the UN 2030 Agenda, which emphasises education, human rights, gender equality, culture of peace and non-violent communication", said Natasa Mihailovic-Vacic, member of the standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean at the plenary session.

On the second day of the session, parliamentarians from 28 countries discussed political and security co-operation and the fight against terrorism. They also elected a new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, vice presidents, as well as chairs of the organisation’s three standing committees. Gennaro Migliore, whose election was supported by the Serbian delegation, was elected the PAM President.

The PAM plenary session was attended by Head of Serbia’s standing delegation Veroljub Arsic and delegation members and deputy members: Natasa Mihailovic-Vacic, Tijana Davidovac, Ivana Nikolic and Ana Beloica.
