National Assembly Speaker with Romanian Dignitaries: Parliamentary Support for Craiova Group

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic met today, in the course of her official visit to Romania, with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and the Chairman of the Romanian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Stefan Zgonea. The officials agreed that the two countries’ relations are good and friendly and should be developed further, especially in the field of economy and through the work of the Craiova Group in the field of infrastructure, transportation and energy.

In the meeting attended by Prime Minister Ponta, Gojkovic and Zgonea noted that the parliaments of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria all support the cooperation within the Craiova Group and should soon sign an agreement and organise a trilateral parliamentary meeting.

Gojkovic endorsed the idea of the parliaments of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria signing a cooperation agreement and lending legal support to the three countries’ extremely important economic cooperation initiative. Gojkovic said she expected an imminent trilateral meeting of the parliament speakers so that the parliaments could help the work of the Craiova Group by passing laws and ratifying agreements.

Romanian Parliament Speaker Zgonea also supported the idea of the trilateral meeting and cooperation agreement.

Zgonea said that the parliaments would be focusing on providing legislative support to the three governments, as well as support in European matters. He urged for a more intensive interparliamentary cooperation between Serbia and Romania through the exchange of experiences and more frequent contacts between their respective working bodies.

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who attended the meeting, endorsed the idea of the trilateral parliamentary meeting, stressing that Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria should look up to the Visegrad Group and help one another, as well as boost economic cooperation.

Ponta also said that Romania is a friend to Serbia and fully supports its European integration, and Gojkovic thanked him for the support saying she was sure the first negotiation chapters would be opened this year.

Gojkovic also met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and thanked him for Romania’s decision not to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that Serbia is dedicated to dialogue and the implementation of the Brussels Agreement.

President Iohannis urged to strengthen economic cooperation and restated that Romania supports Serbia’s road to the EU.

Gojkovic also spoke to the President of the Romanian Senate Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu about strengthening interparliamentary cooperation at the highest level, as well as between working bodies.

During her official visit to Romania Gojkovic also spoke to the country’s leadership about the status of the Romanian national minority in Serbia and Serbian in Romania, stressing that they are the bridge between the two countries.
