National Assembly Speaker about Discussion on Decision Proposal

Taking part in the discussion on the Proposal of the Decision on the Establishment of the Composition of the Commission Monitoring the Execution of the National Action Plan for the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 - Women, Peace and Security as the submitter, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, said that this item on the session’s agenda is important both for the parliament and the society as a whole, especially as regards gender equality.

Stefanovic said that women play an important role in understanding, preventing and resolving conflicts, adding that gender equality means equal opportunities for men and women, which is a basic democratic tenet contained in the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia. Stefanovic reminded that women make up 51.3% of the population of the Republic of Serbia, declaring gender equality important for the society, but also adding that these rights are sometimes neglected. Stefanovic said that the National Assembly and society have to do all in their power to make sure these rights are never disregarded.
Speaking of the national plan for the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325, the NARS Speaker said that 32.93% of the current parliamentary legislature are women i.e. there are 82 female MPs, adding that he was not pleased by the number and that he hoped ladies would make up at least 50% of the next parliamentary legislature, a goal toward which, he hoped, all the parliamentary groups would contribute in future.
Finally, the NARS Speaker said that, considering the proposed composition of the Commission monitoring the execution of the National Action Plan which is to comprise representatives from the committees on gender equality, defence, internal affairs, foreign affairs, labour and social policy, judiciary and public administration, as well as a representative of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, he could safely say that the Commission would significantly contribute to the efficient implementation of the National Action Plan.
