National Assembly Speaker Visits Iran, Meets with Larijani

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic began her official two-day visit to Iran by meeting with the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Larijani.

Gojkovic and Larijani spoke about improving relations between the two countries, discussed topics of common interest, possible modes of cooperation between the two parliaments, and potentials for the improvement of economic, agricultural, educational and cultural cooperation.

Gojkovic pointed out that meetings between Serbian and Iranian dignitaries testify to the countries’ clear mutual interest in utilizing the potentials they have, adding that interparliamentary cooperation has a special role in the two countries’ relations.

The National Assembly Speaker said that there is room to step up the contacts between the two parliaments’ friendship groups and committees in charge of economy, energy, agriculture, education, science and culture, as well as improve cooperation at the multilateral level, that is in international organisations.

Gojkovic thanked Iran for not recognising Kosovo-Metohija and Larijani reaffirmed the country’s support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The officials also discussed developing economic cooperation, stressing that the parliaments could stimulate that cooperation and support the two governments’ agreements by swift ratification.

Larijani opined that the visit could open a new chapter in the development of business relations between Serbia and Iran, adding that the moment is right to realise the cooperation potentials.

Gojkovic also met with the co-chairman of the Iranian Government’s Mixed Trade Commission and Minister of Trade, Mining and Industry Nematzadeh who noted that there is ample room to boost the existing 20-million USD worth trade. The officials opined that the upcoming meeting of the Mixed Trade Commission would be very important in this matter.

Gojkovic expects this to be an inspiration and opportunity to analyse the potential to deepen economic cooperation and stated that direct business contacts between Iranian and Serbian entrepreneurs should be encouraged.

Nematzadeh said that an increase in the exchange in goods between the two countries should be followed by an increased volume of investments between the two countries.

Gojkovic informed her hosts about Serbia’s Euro-integration process and its economic reform, and they also discussed migrations and the problem of terrorism.

Tomorrow, on the second day of her visit, organised at the invitation of the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Larijani, Gojkovic will meet with Iranian Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, advisor to the Supreme Religious Leader for foreign policy Akbar Velayati and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

MP Dragomir Karic, member of the PFG with Iran, is also part of the delegation and will have meetings at the Iranian Chamber of Commerce.
