The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received today the Slovakian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jan Kubis, in his official visit to Serbia.

Minister Kubis congratulated Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic on being elected Speaker of the National Assembly and wished her success in her work. He stressed that Slovakia supports Serbia on its way to the European Union and is ready to aid it in its efforts. Concerning that, he expressed his belief that the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU should be ratified as soon as possible.

Minister Kubis reiterated that Slovakia does not acknowledge the self-declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija and believes that the issue must be solved under the provisions of international law, i.e. in line with the UNSC Resolution 1244. However, Slovakia supports the UN Secretary-General’s activities in Kosovo-Metohija and EULEX Mission, which is, according to his estimate, based on UNSC Resolution 1244 and should provide protection for all citizens of Kosovo.

The Speaker of the National Assembly expressed her gratitude to Slovakia on its principled support of Serbia’s protection of a part of its territory, and then briefed the guest on the National Assembly and Government’s most important tasks in the upcoming period, namely the realisation of Serbia’s state and national interests, speedier accession to the EU, economic development, improvement of the population’s social conditions and fighting crime.

The Speaker of the National Assembly stressed that any solution to the status of Kosovo-Metohija not brought at the UN Security Council and not based on the provisions of international law is unacceptable for Serbia.

During the conversation it was jointly deemed that the good political relations between Serbia and Slovakia are the basis for further improvement of the total bilateral cooperation, especially economic, where there is a lot of room for cooperation in the field of investment. Slovakian minority in Serbia which represents an important bridge of cooperation between Serbia and Slovakia, gives a special contribution to the friendship between the two countries.
