National Assembly Speaker Talks to Newly-Appointed US Ambassador to Belgrade
The National Assembly Speaker, Nebojsa Stefanovic, received H.E. Michael Kirby, newly-appointed US Ambassador to Belgrade, and associates, as well as the Director of the State Department’s Office of South Central European Affairs, Jonathan Moore.
The US Ambassador thanked the Speaker for the reception, stressing his firm belief in improving cooperation and showing interest in the dynamics and topics of the parliament’s work in the upcoming period.
National Assembly Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic was pleased by the meeting and informed his guests of the Parliament’s priorities, development of the oversight function by controlling the executive and strengthening the role of the committees, further development of democratic institutions and increasing the transparency of the Parliament’s work. Stefanovic listed strengthening the principle of the rule of law as a fundamental priority in the legislative domain. He was also interested in promoting interparliamentary cooperation, particularly in view of exchanging experiences related to the institution of parliamentary hearing within the National Assembly’s oversight function.
Ambassador Kirby informed the Speaker of the US side’s interest in cooperation on said priorities, particularly in the context of US support for the Euro-integration process, listing the details of the procedure for public hearings at the US Congress. The US Ambassador showed interest in the Parliament’s role in the Euro-integration process, as well as regards the Kosovo-Metohija issue, fight against corruption and the legislation relating to party funding, underlining the role of parliamentary oversight over the implementation of laws.
Speaker Stefanovic informed his guests on the parliamentary questions procedure, overall legislative efforts directed toward improving the stability and independence of institutions, planned activities in the Euro-integration process, planned activities on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija, the procedure the Public Procurement Law is undergoing and overall activities in the reform processes.
