National Assembly Speaker Talks to Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, heading the National Assembly’s delegation in visit to Japan, met with the Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura in Tokyo.

Djukic Dejanovic gave a very high estimate of the bilateral relations between Serbia and Japan, expressing her pleasure at the exchange of notes and signing of the yen loan agreement the Japanese Government granted for the project of desulphurization of the Nikola Tesla Thermal Power Plant in Obrenovac. The procedure for a second yen loan that Serbia applied for, intended for the processing of wastewaters in Belgrade, is expected to begin soon.

The officials hope that the economic cooperation will continue its upward trend both in the sphere of trade and investment, joint investment and ventures on third markets. In that context, it was mentioned that Serbia has signed free trade agreements (Russia and CEFTA) which would facilitate the access to a market of more than 200 million people.

Djukic Dejanovic stated that 2012 would mark the 130th anniversary of the first official communication between Serbia and Japan – the correspondence between King Milan and Emperor Meiji, reminding of the open invitations to a member of the Japanese imperial family, as well as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to visit Serbia.

The Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary, among other things, deemed the visit of the delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia conducive to strengthening the relations between the two countries which could continue to improve.
