The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received today the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Serbia, his excellency Ajay Swarup.

The Ambassador congratulated Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic on being elected Parliament Speaker, extending the Indian Parliament Speaker’s official invitation to visit India as head of the National Assembly’s delegation.

In the conversation, it was deemed that the relations of the two countries are characterised by a traditional closeness and friendship manifested in various areas over the decades, and that there is a mutual interest to foster and strengthen the overall cooperation. In addition to the improvement of political dialogue, the furthering of economic cooperation for which there are many possibilities is particularly important. The possibility of scientific, educational and medical cooperation were also pointed out in the conversation.

Both officials stressed that the improvement of parliamentary cooperation of the two countries with the active support of their respective governments and ministries should represent an incentive for the strengthening of all other forms of cooperation.

Ambassador Swarup stressed that India and Serbia cooperate successfully in numerous international organisations, which also indicates the closeness of their viewpoints on many foreign policy issues.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic expressed her gratitude for India’s understanding and support of Serbia in its struggle to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
