The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to the Republic of Serbia, Imre Varga.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to the Republic of Serbia, Imre Varga.

At the beginning of the meeting, Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic welcomed the new Ambassador to the Parliament and Serbia, expressing an expectation that the two neighbouring countries’ good relations shall be on the rise in the upcoming period.

The Hungarian Ambassador and the National Assembly Speaker gave a high estimate of the parliamentary relations between Serbia and Hungary, adding that both countries are interested in furthering them. The Cooperation Agreement between the two parliaments greatly contributes to it as it represents a good model for establishing cooperation with parliaments of other neighbouring countries.

Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic applauded the idea of maintaining parliamentary cooperation not only on the level of parliamentary speakers, but on that of parliamentary bodies and expert services as well, and invited the newly elected Hungarian Parliament Speaker Katon Bela to visit the National Assembly before the end of the year.

Ambassador Varga reminded those present that a Hungarian-Serbian friendship group has recently been created at their Parliament and expressed hope that the two groups may meet soon. He also stressed that Hungary is interested to see Serbia join the European Union as soon as possible and that it shall fully support Serbia in that matter.

The officials also talked about the Statute of AP Vojvodina and how important it is that it be verified at the National Assembly. Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic said that the National Assembly should first pass a law establishing Vojvodina’s authorities and expressed an expectation that it shall find itself before the National Assembly deputies by the end of October.
