The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to Serbia, H.E. Imre Varga, in a farewell visit, at the National Assembly House.

In the meeting, the National Assembly Speaker and Hungarian Ambassador stated that the parliamentary relations between Serbia and Hungary had been raised to a high level and that both countries are interested in improving them further. Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic stressed that the signing of the Cooperation Treaty between the two parliaments had significantly contributed to it as a good model of establishing cooperation between parliaments of neighbouring countries.

Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic applauded the idea of maintaining parliamentary cooperation not only on the level of parliament speakers, but also parliamentary bodies, friendship groups and support services. They also agreed that a delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Hungarians Living Abroad should visit the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia as soon as September.

Ambassador Varga stressed that Hungary is interested in seeing Serbia join the European Union, stressing that Hungary would fully support it on the way.

The National Assembly Speaker thanked Hungary for its essential assistance to Serbia’s approach to the European Union so far, stressing that such support would be particularly important during Hungary’s presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2011.

On the occasion, Ambassador Varga also invited the National Assembly Speaker to visit the Hungarian Parliament.
