Today at the National Assembly House, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received the Director of the International Radio Serbia (Radio Yugoslavia) Milorad Vujovic.

The topic of their conversation was the current unenviable situation in this international medium. Vujovic drew the Assembly Speaker’s attention to issues that prevent its functioning and proper information of the international public and the diaspora on events in Serbia and the region.

The Assembly Speaker stressed the importance of all the media in keeping the public informed, particularly the media that inform Serbian citizens in the diaspora on events in the country and stated that she would do all in her jurisdiction to help improve the situation in the medium.

The medium’s Council adopted conclusions on measures to be implemented to resolve the status issues starting form the medium’s name to defining its role and task.

Last year’s budget rebalance considerably decreased the funds intended for the functioning of the International Radio Serbia, seriously bringing into question the completion of its business and program tasks. The proposal of the Director of the Radio, Milorad Vujovic, endorsed by the medium’s Council, was forwarded to the Ministry of Culture. The proposal, among other things, says that an Ordinance should be passed on the foundation of International Radio Serbia as an official medium – public institution of the Republic that does not fall under the provisions of the Public Information Law. That would be a provisional solution until the possible adoption of a Law on International Radio Serbia.
