The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, in a two-day visit to Serbia.

President Klaus stressed that his visit is an expression of true friendship between the two states and nations, which should be confirmed by furthering the overall cooperation of the two countries. We want Serbia to go forward and join us in the European Union, the Czech President pointed out. However, he stated that every country has its specific road of accession to the EU, which is neither quick nor easy.

Before joining the EU, the Czech Republic spent a long time knocking at its door, President Vaclav Klaus said. We do not want the door to close for other European countries because we believe that it should unify them all.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic welcomed the esteemed guest on her own behalf and the behalf of the deputies, stressing that the National Assembly values the support the Czech Parliament lends Serbia on its road to European integration. She particularly pointed out the need to intensify inter-parliamentary cooperation, by visits of parliamentary delegations, cooperation of friendship groups and various types of contact between assembly committees. Parliamentary cooperation should encourage all other types of cooperation between the two traditionally friendly countries, especially economic cooperation.

The National Assembly Speaker briefed the esteemed guest on the National Assembly’s legislative activity, stemming from the priorities of Serbia’s state and national politics.
