National Assembly Speaker Receives Head of OSCE Mission to Serbia

The National Assembly Speaker, MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, received H.E. Peter Burkhard, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, and associates, at the National Assembly House.

National Assembly Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic declared the existing cooperation with the OSCE Mission to Serbia very successful, thanking the OSCE for its assistance in achieving one of the Government and Assembly legislation’s priority goals - further integration into the European Union.
H.E. Peter Burkhard thanked the National Assembly Speaker for the reception, agreeing with his comment and the assessment of the existing cooperation as successful and hoping that it would be continued.
They agreed that Serbia and Switzerland’s presidency of the OSCE in 2014 and 2015 would help not only show a fitting image of Serbia, but also improve the Serbian citizens’ knowledge about the role and importance of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
The OSCE representatives were especially pleased by the current progress of the joint e-Parliament project, the full implementation of which, as Speaker Stefanovic informed them, is expected in early October, adding that some Assembly committee sittings are already held electronically.
H.E. Peter Burkhard and his associates stressed that the role of the Parliament is crucial for the development of democracy and noted the efforts put into strengthening the role of committees in the Serbian Parliament, which the National Assembly Speaker agreed with, declaring it to be a direct goal because it would also strengthen the Parliament’s control role and raise the legislative power’s reputation in the Serbian public.
In the course of the meeting the officials touched on several issues in which the OSCE cooperates with various institutions in Serbia and both sides expressed their pleasure as regards the realisation of the existing projects.
