National Assembly Speaker Opens Exhibition Dedicated to Ivo Andric

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic opened an exhibition at the National Assembly House marking the 60th anniversary of Ivo Andric receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE SPEECH OF THE SPEAKER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA IN ITS ENTIRETY:

“Ladies and gentlemen,
Dear friends,

It is a great honour to welcome you to the National Assembly on such a beautiful occasion as the 60th anniversary of Ivo Andric being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Throughout the year, gatherings and cultural events have been organised in memory of one of the greatest events in our culture, and now, at its very end, we have the pleasure to remember together 10 December 1961, when our famous writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in the Swedish Royal Academy Concert Hall in Stockholm.

This exhibition we present today to Belgrade, Serbia and all of our guests is just a small sign of our great respect for the only Nobel Prize winner from our region and his magnificent literary work. Since that day, 10 December 1961, the whole world, which then got the opportunity to get to know us through Andric’s literary work, has been sharing our respect for the great author. On that day, Andric’s literary work was recognised as universal, timeless, despite the fact that it was written in a "small language", as he himself said. Or, as it was said in the explanation of the award - "Andric opens one, hitherto unknown page of the world chronicle and addresses us from the depths of the tormented soul of the South Slavs".

It was the day the world was introduced to the "small country between worlds", as Andric called his homeland and we proudly remember and keep the memory of that moment.

Today's event would not be complete if I did not, nor can I allow myself to not to, say something, as the National Assembly Speaker and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, about Andric - the Nobel Prize winner, as well as diplomat and member of this Assembly.

His rich and successful diplomatic career, at a most difficult time, completes the picture of Ivo Andric as a great patriot, a man above all dedicated to his people. With the same motives he was a member of the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1945 and 1950, as well as a member of the Federal Assembly, where today we honour the memory of him.

Ivo Andric was all that and it is impossible to omit any episode from his life. They all make this man one of the world greats, as we and the whole world remember him through his work.

Please enjoy the exhibition in the honour of Ivo Andric and celebrate this day when he was given the world's greatest recognition for achievements in literature with a sense of respect for his great work.

Thank you!"
