National Assembly Speaker Meets with President of Burundi
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the President of the Republic of Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye, currently in official visit to our country.
Brnabic stressed that Serbia and Burundi are bound by common values and long-standing friendship, and that she believes there is potential for parliamentary cooperation, which would contribute to the further advancement of bilateral cooperation. She announced that a Parliamentary Friendship Group with Burundi will be formed in the near future, which will serve to better understand the legislative authorities of the two countries and work on joint projects.
She expressed satisfaction that the two countries’ had signed nine cooperation agreements during the President’s visit and thanked the Republic of Burundi for withdrawing its recognition of the independence of the southern Serbian province of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as for abstaining in the vote on the Srebrenica Resolution in the United Nations. She said that all of these moves are a pledge for the future friendship between Serbia and Burundi.
The Speaker also said that Serbia is grateful for Burundi's support in its bid to host EXPO 2027, and that via this exhibition and Burundi's participation in it, the two countries will launch another form of cooperation and that the exhibition is a good opportunity to present the potential of the Republic of Burundi.
President Ndayishimiye said that his country needs friends like Serbia, who can offer knowledge and expertise for its further development. He said that Burundi is a country with many natural resources that investors from Serbia could help with. He expressed his readiness to improve parliamentary cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by the National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus, and the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy, MP Nikola Radosavljevic.
