National Assembly Speaker Meets with ODIHR Director

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Mariа Telalian.

Speaker Brnabic deemed the meeting very important, especially in the context of intensive work on the implementation of ODIHR recommendations which, she stressed, contribute to the improvement of the improvement of the electoral process and strengthening of democratic institutions. She thanked Director Telalian and the ODIHR team for the continued support and expert contribution to the process.

She emphasised one important step in the improvement of the operation of the National Assembly – the establishment of the Working Group for the Improvement of the Electoral Process, for the first time in the parliament’s history, with the participation of civil society organisations, which have been entrusted with the chairmanship of the body. She expressed regret for the decision of some representatives of civil society to leave the group, stressing that they remain key partners in the development of a democratic society. She reaffirmed her full commitment to the continuation of dialogue and efforts to restart the cooperation in the interest of the citizens of the Republic of Serbia.

Director Telalian thanked Speaker Brnabic for her personal engagement on promoting political dialogue and stressed that the democratic process requires cooperation among all the actors – government, opposition and the civil sector. She restated that ODIHR remains a partner to Serbia and offers support not just to the improvement of the electoral process but the strengthening of democratic institution in the broader sense.
