National Assembly Speaker Meets with Head of EU Delegation to Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret. On that occasion, Ambassador Giaufret presented the Assembly Speaker with the European Commission Annual Report on Serbia for 2024.

Brnabic thanked Ambassador Giaufret for the Report, saying that it is extremely useful for all the institutions in the country to have better insight into which areas would need to invest extra effort in the future. She said that she will carefully analyse the Report to see what the National Assembly can concretely do to bring our country as close as possible to its main strategic foreign policy goal, which is membership in the European Union.

Ambassador Giaufret presented the main findings of the Report and asked Serbia to speed up reforms related to EU accession and take advantage of the new enlargement momentum. He reminded the Speaker that the final date taken into consideration was 1 September which is why some of the latest positive events have not been included in the Report. He welcomed the dialogue with the opposition, which was initiated by Speaker Brnabic, the formation of working groups in which representatives of opposition parties and civil society actively participate, the reduction of the number of laws adopted under emergency procedures and said that he expects the adoption of the work plan.

The Parliament Speaker reiterated that all the reforms implemented by Serbia are not an end in themselves nor do they serve merely to meet the norms, they will contribute to a better standard of living for all citizens of Serbia. To that end, Brnabic underlined the importance of the recommendation to open new negotiation chapters with Serbia within the framework of cluster three, in the annual report, and expressed her strong hope that those chapters will indeed be opened.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs.
