National Assembly Speaker Meets with Danish Foreign Ministry Special Envoy on Migration

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, met today with the Special Envoy on Migration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, Nicolaj Petersen, currently engaged on addressing issues of migration, asylum and the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights within the Council of Europe.

Speaker Brnabic emphasised our country's commitment to the European Convention on Human Rights and the independence of the European Court of Human Rights. Also, as a member of the Council of Europe and an EU candidate country, Serbia is aware that respecting the Convention and enforcing judgments is the foundation of its credibility.

She expressed understanding for the need of states to engage in a dialogue about the balance between the protection of human rights and the state's ability to protect public order and security, especially in cases of serious crimes and the challenges of modern migration, and said that Serbia is ready to share its experiences concerning the implementation of the Convention, reforms in the area of the rule of law and migration, as well as the process of harmonisation with European standards within the framework of Chapter 23.

The officials highlighted the continuation of good dialogue with Denmark, stressing that this meeting represents a continuation of open dialogue, as well as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of law, human rights and European integration.
