National Assembly Speaker Meets with Ambassador of Netherlands

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, met today with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Martijn Elgersma.

On the occasion, the National Assembly Speaker stressed that the bilateral relations between the two countries are good and that the political dialogue has been significantly improved and intensified, with ample room to further develop parliamentary cooperation. She believes that an exchange of visits of dignitaries and parliamentary representatives would give a strong impetus to the deepening of said cooperation and reminded there has been no official visit by the Dutch Speaker of Parliament to Serbia in the past several decades. With that in mind, she announced her visit to the Netherlands in the near future.

Ambassador Elgersma said he believed the visit would contribute to strengthening parliamentary ties, adding that Parliament has an important role in foreign policy. He also said that he is pleased to see Serbia taking steps on its path of reforms for EU membership.

In that context, the National Assembly Speaker informed the Ambassador about the steadfast work on the implementation of the ODIHR recommendations for improving the electoral process, the improvement of media laws, as well as the public call for the new REM Council, emphasising that our country needs a good Council composed of experts and that she hopes this will be achieved in the coming months.

She also reminded the guest that our country's membership in the European Union is a strategic commitment and a priority of Serbia's foreign policy, and that the Parliament has a prominent role in this process, adding that she hopes for the opening of Cluster 3 and the support of member states in this, given that the standstill in the EU integration process has a demotivating effect on public opinion.
