National Assembly Speaker Discusses Serbia’s Euro-Integration with EU Parliament Speakers

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic took part in the two-day Conference of the Speakers of the Parliaments of European Union Member States in Rome, attended by 25 parliament speakers from both EU member and candidate states.


In the course of the Conference, organised by the Italian Parliament, Gojkovic met with Spanish Congress President Jesus Posada and also discussed parliamentary cooperation and Euro-integration with the parliament speakers of Hungary, Poland, Cypress, Malta, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, and Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Gojkovic stressed that European integration is Serbia’s chief foreign policy priority, adding that the country is fully dedicated to reform and the improvement of regional cooperation.
The National Assembly Speaker said she expected the first negotiations chapters to be opened this year, which would send a positive signal that the EU recognises the progress Serbia has made.
Gojkovic also informed her counterparts on the dynamics of the National Assembly’s work in the last year and the adoption of a great many reform laws in the fields of labour and employment, privatisation, planning and construction, all aimed at facilitating business dealings, stimulating private initiative and attracting investment.
At the Conference, the participants also passed the Declaration on strengthening rescue operations in the Mediterranean which calls for concrete and effective steps and mechanisms to avoid i.e. prevent future tragedies.
Among the topics of the Conference, the parliament speakers also discussed new paths of growth after the economic and financial crisis in Europe, human rights and freedoms, solidarity and security, as well as the role of parliaments in the negotiations on international agreements.
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz also participated in the Conference.
