National Assembly Speaker Discusses Euro-Integration with D’Souza and Lidington

In the course of her visit to the UK, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met with Lord Speaker of the UK House of Lords, Baroness Frances D’Souza and Minister for Europe David Lidington with whom she discussed Serbia’s reforms and Euro-integration.

Gojkovic informed Baroness D’Souza about the National Assembly’s intense legislative activities within the reform process Serbia is undergoing and harmonisation of Serbian legislation with the EU acquis.

“We believe that the laws we pass will attract foreign investment and ensure economic growth”, said Gojkovic, highlighting her commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation with the UK.

Presenting the measures implemented by the Government and the National Assembly in the meeting with the Minister for Europe, Gojkovic stressed that Serbia is dedicated to reform and European integration.

Gojkovic and Lidington agreed that Serbia has made considerable progress on the road to Euro-integration, and the Assembly Speaker stressed that the European partners’ clear support is of great importance for Serbian society.

Gojkovic said that Serbia aims to complete all the reform necessary for it to become a European Union member by 2018, after which it would be up to the EU to decide on its membership.

The National Assembly delegation comprising Parliament deputy speakers Veroljub Arsic and Vladimir Marinkovic visited the National Audit Office, as well as the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) which had organised the visit as part of its project aimed at strengthening the role of parliaments in the Western Balkans.

After London, the Assembly delegation will continue its visit to the UK in Edinburgh where it will visit the Scottish Parliament.
