The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, took part in the Serbian judges’ conference Judges’ Days 2009, traditionally organised by the Serbian Supreme Court, and held in Vrnjacka Banja from 4 to 6 October.

Addressing all present, the National Assembly Speaker stressed that judges do highly qualified and important social work that deserves the respect of the whole society, as their personal functions require responsible and respectable behaviour according to generally recognised moral and highly professional principles and laws.

Between last year’s and this year’s conference, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia fulfilled its obligation to harmonise with the Constitution those laws pertaining to the application of the provisions of the Constitution to the courts and public prosecution.

Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic also announced that the agenda for tomorrow’s National Assembly session contains the election of members of the High Judiciary Council and State Prosecutors’ Council from the ranks of attorneys at law. At the same time a member of the High Judicial Council from the ranks of law faculty professors is also to be elected. That would complete the composition of all these bodies allowing them to perform their lawful duties to their full capacity.

After the systemic changes brought about by the new legal solutions and the judiciary’s independence from legal and executive government, the expertise and quality of each individual bearer of judiciary office and all employed in the judiciary should fully come to the fore.

Wishing the participants success in their work, with deep respect to the judges’ office, the NARS Speaker expressed a wish that they cultivate their autonomous and independent position so as to aid Serbia’s development.
