National Assembly Session Simulation

The National Assembly House hosted a National Assembly Session Simulation for high-school students from 40 Serbian municipalities and towns.

The session was opened by National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic. The Serbian Assembly Speaker said she was particularly pleased to be able to greet the youth of Serbia in these difficult circumstances when the country is fighting a disaster, unprecedented floods and landslides, adding that young people showed the noblest side of Serbia.
“The danger is not over, but along with the sadness for the victims and losses our country has cause to be proud, proud for the strength of its people and of you, the younger generation who had selflessly put itself at the disposal of the country and its institutions, at the first line of defence against the disaster”, said the Parliament Speaker.
The National Assembly Speaker thanked all the friends of Serbia from all over the world who had come to its aid, as well as US Ambassador Michael Kirby for his country’s assistance, adding that Serbia continues to count on the help of its proven friends because overcoming the impact of the catastrophe would be a long process and demand a lot more work, sacrifice and funds.
Gojkovic told the high-schoolers that it was decided to hold this important project in these days of mourning because of the future Serbia sees in them. “We are sending a clear message that in this situation in particular, despite the difficulties, the Serbian Assembly has to work even more”, said Gojkovic, telling the high-schoolers that the most important thing in today’s session simulation I for them to feel the strength of arguments, spirit of democracy, culture of dialogue and openness to a different opinion.
“I am sure you will take away today’s experience and share its value with your fellow citizens who have not had the opportunity, like you do today, to have direct contact with the work of the National Assembly”, said Gojkovic.
The high-schoolers were also addressed by US Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Michael Kirby. The Ambassador first expressed deep sympathy for the tragedy caused by the flooding, on the behalf of US President Barack Obama, the American people and himself. He said that the United States are one of the friendly countries who had come to Serbia’s aid, adding that in these difficult times for Serbia the US Government continues to support the Serbian Government. Ambassador Kirby then proceeded to talk about how the US Congress and Senate function and compared it with the functioning of the Serbian Parliament. He commended the fact that an event like this one was organised, stressing that young people need to learn how the National Assembly and the Government of the Republic of Serbia function. He told the high-schoolers that the youth is the power which should shape the future of their country.
MP Vladimir Pavicevic informed the high-schoolers about the functioning of the National Assembly. He spoke of the important role the National Assembly’s work plays in the political system of the Republic of Serbia.
The National Assembly Session Simulation was organised by Youth Education Committee NGO and the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
