National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Meets with Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today with the Chairman of the Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Zsolt Nemeth, in the National Assembly House. The meeting was also attended by Committee Deputy Chairman Milan Radin and Committee Deputy Member Mgr Akos Ujhelyi.

The officials expressed mutual satisfaction with the meeting and discussions, which can contribute to the further strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries. They agreed that interparliamentary cooperation is an extremely important segment of overall bilateral relations and that there is room for its further improvement.

The topics broached by Nemeth related to the current election period in Hungary, as well as global issues, such as energy stability, which is a key factor of economic security. He took the opportunity to once again express condolences on the 27th anniversary of the NATO bombing of Serbia, as well as interest in the possibilities of further strengthening cooperation between Serbia and the United States.

A significant part of the conversation was dedicated to strategically important issues for Serbia, such as the European integration process and the current situation in Kosovo-Metohija. Elvira Kovacs thanked Hungary for its continued support for Serbia on its path towards the European Union and recalled the efforts that Serbia has invested in implementing reforms. She highlighted the improvement of the electoral process, stressing that the ODIHR recommendations have been taken into account, as well as that Serbia pays significant attention to the protection of the rights of national minorities and their equal participation in the electoral process.

Nemeth said that Serbia can always count on Hungary's support on its European path, and that Hungary is ready to share its experiences in the process of accession to the European Union.

Speaking about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, Milan Radin recalled that Serbia has fulfilled all the obligations assumed by the Brussels Agreement, while the Pristina side has not fulfilled any of them, especially the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities. Elvira Kovacs also pointed out the difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, which, she emphasised, is not being discussed enough.

Nemeth assessed that, despite the challenges Serbia faces, there is political stability, which is confirmed by the adoption of strategic documents, such as the "Serbia 2030-2035" development strategy, as well as the country's ability to attract foreign investors.
